Technical Tour

Post Conference Technical Tour - Stormwater QLD

Full Day Technical Tour

8.30 am - 4.30 pm

Kingsford Smith Drive Upgrade Project

The first stop on the field tour is to the Kingsford Smith Drive Upgrade project, which is currently under construction and due for completion in 2019. Brisbane City Council (BCC) is upgrading Kingsford Smith Drive to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety. The upgrade involves widening a 3.5km stretch from four to six lanes from Eagle Farm to Hamilton, and involves extensive works along the banks of the Brisbane River.

Attendees will take a site walk through active construction areas and view the challenges for erosion and sediment control in the highly constrained work corridor. With limited space, a sensitive marine environment, and a large upslope catchment draining through the work area, the project team of BCC and Lend Lease has developed an innovative and proactive approach to environmental management during construction.

This stop on the field tour includes walking approximately 2.5km (on flat ground) through an active construction site. All attendees must bring their own PPE – no spares will be available! This is to include hard hat with a wide brim, protective safety boots (lace-up or elastic-sided), long sleeve shirt with hi-vis vest or shirt, long pants, protective eyewear and safety gloves. Anyone without all of the correct PPE will not be permitted to join the field tour.

King Street and The Green Residential Tower

At this site, the following will be covered:

  • Design of bio-retention gardens within highly trafficked road reserve.
  • Diversion of low flows to stormwater treatment within road reserve.
  • Design of rooftop gardens to provide stormwater treatment in raised garden beds and provide 90% of irrigation demand.
  • Recirculation of runoff through stormwater treatment in order to maximise efficiency.
  • Construction issues and lessons learnt

Cockatoo Place Rochedale

At this site, the following will be covered:

  • Outline of the life of the asset from design, construction through to maintenance and the handover to council (public) ownership and responsibility
  • Discussion around the intended objective of the asset design in meeting construction and post construction local authority water quality requirements
  • Discussion of the staged construction methods to ensure the integrity of the asset was kept and any limitations of this staged design/construction;
  • Demonstration of the intended asset maintenance and Maintenance Management Plan (MMP) that was implemented
  • Discussion of the handover of the asset from Defects Liability (Developer/Contractor responsibility) to Council (Public responsibility)
  • Discussion of what would be the local authority requirements if the asset remained under Private ownership and management. How would this be tracked and regulated by Council.
